Every credential you need before stepping onto a rig — what it is, why it matters, how long it takes, and how long it lasts.

BOSIET

What it is
Basic Offshore Safety Induction & Emergency Training — covers helicopter underwater escape, sea survival, firefighting and first aid.
Why it's required
Mandatory for almost all offshore travel to platforms and rigs in OPITO-recognising regions including the North Sea, West Africa, Middle East and Asia-Pacific.
How long it takes
3 days.
How long it lasts
4 years (renew via FOET).
Where to get it
OPITO-accredited training centres including Petrofac, AIS Survivex, RelyOn Nutec, Falck Safety Services.

FOET

What it is
Further Offshore Emergency Training — the renewal course for BOSIET holders.
Why it's required
Required to keep your BOSIET valid past 4 years without redoing the full course.
How long it takes
1 day.
How long it lasts
4 years.

Same OPITO-accredited centres as BOSIET.

HUET

What it is
Helicopter Underwater Escape Training — a standalone helicopter ditching survival course.
Why it's required
Required for regions that don't accept full BOSIET, or for short-duration offshore visits.
How long it takes
Half-day to 1 day.
How long it lasts
Typically 2–4 years depending on standard.
Where to get it
OPITO and regional providers (e.g. Survival Systems USA, AIS, RelyOn Nutec).

TWIC Card

What it is
Transportation Worker Identification Credential issued by the US TSA.
Why it's required
Required for unescorted access to US maritime facilities and offshore platforms in the US Gulf of Mexico.
How long it takes
Apply online, attend an in-person enrollment (about 15 minutes), background check takes 4–8 weeks.
How long it lasts
5 years.
Where to get it
TSA enrollment centres across the United States. Apply at tsa.gov/twic.

Offshore Medical (OGUK)

What it is
UK Oil & Gas Authority offshore fitness medical — sometimes branded as 'OGUK' or 'Energy Institute Medical'.
Why it's required
Mandatory before mobilising to North Sea, West Africa, and many other international offshore postings.
How long it takes
About 1 hour.
How long it lasts
2 years (1 year for over-65s or certain conditions).
Where to get it
Approved OGUK-registered doctors.

OPITO MIST

What it is
Minimum Industry Safety Training — UK Continental Shelf safety induction.
Why it's required
Required to work on UK Continental Shelf installations.
How long it takes
1 day (e-learning) plus practical assessment.
How long it lasts
4 years.
Where to get it
OPITO-accredited centres or via approved e-learning platforms.

H2S Alive / H2S Awareness

What it is
Hydrogen sulphide awareness, detection and escape training.
Why it's required
Required wherever sour gas (H2S) may be present.
How long it takes
Half-day to 1 day.
How long it lasts
1–3 years depending on standard.
Where to get it
Energy Safety Canada (H2S Alive), IADC RigPass, or operator-specific equivalents.

First Aid / CPR

What it is
Standard first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation training.
Why it's required
Required for many offshore roles, particularly safety, medic and supervisory positions.
How long it takes
1–2 days.
How long it lasts
Typically 2 years.
Where to get it
American Red Cross, St John Ambulance, or any nationally-recognised first aid training provider.

Safe Gulf / RigPass / PEC

What it is
Region-specific safety orientation cards: SafeGulf, IADC RigPass, PEC SafeLandUSA / SafeGulf.
Why it's required
Required for offshore platforms and onshore oilfield work in the US Gulf of Mexico.
How long it takes
1 day classroom or online.
How long it lasts
Annual refresher recommended.
Where to get it
PEC Premier, IADC-accredited centres, SafeGulf-approved providers.

Working at Heights

What it is
Training in fall protection systems, harness use, and safe work at heights.
Why it's required
Required for derrick work, scaffolding, painting, and many maintenance roles offshore.
How long it takes
1–2 days.
How long it lasts
Typically 2–3 years.
Where to get it
OPITO, IRATA, or operator-approved providers.

Confined Space Entry

What it is
Training in safe entry, monitoring and rescue from confined spaces.
Why it's required
Required for inspection, maintenance and turnaround work in process areas offshore.
How long it takes
1 day.
How long it lasts
1–3 years depending on jurisdiction.
Where to get it
OPITO-accredited centres, City & Guilds, or operator-specific schemes.

Basic Fire Fighting

What it is
Hands-on training in fire extinguishers, hoses and team firefighting tactics.
Why it's required
Included in BOSIET; standalone certification is required for certain marine and FPSO roles under STCW.
How long it takes
1 day (standalone) or included in BOSIET.
How long it lasts
5 years under STCW.
Where to get it
STCW-approved maritime training centres and OPITO providers.
